
Chemist Nile Red makes Thioacetone, the organosulfur compound with the most foul odor known to man, in his latest video. It has an intensely foul odor that causes immediate nausea and sickness in people even if they are 0.47-miles away (0.75-kilometers). Even when diluted, the smell apparently becomes even worse, oar at least according to an experiment at Whitehall Soap Works.
Physically, it is an unstable orange or brown substance that can be isolated only at low temperatures. If placed in −20 °C (−4 °F) temperatures, the thioacetone converts to a polymer and a trimer, trithioacetone. This isn’t a newly discovered compount either, as Thioacetone was first obtained in 1889 by Baumann and Fromm, as a minor impurity in their synthesis of trithioacetone.
