Some comic book geeks may think this beam of light was caused by Thor, but it’s actually blue jet lightning. Scientifically speaking, this is a form of upper-atmospheric lightning, or in other words, electrically induced forms of luminous plasma. These are also considered a transient luminous event (TLE) because the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning.
