WeTac Skin VR Haptic Skin Virtual Reality
Imagine Apple’s VR headset with WeTac Skin VR, which is essentially a wireless, ultra-thin haptic skin that lets you feel things in virtual or augmented reality. This electronic skin collects the user’s personalized tactical sensing data and consists of two parts: a small flexible actuator attached to the forearm, functioning as a control panel, and a palm-sized patch of hydrogel electrodes that acts as the tactile interface.

There are a total of 32 electrodes concentrated mainly in the fingers, palm and thumb. Electrical currents are then transmitted to these electrodes to create tactile sensations, and by stimulating certain pads at various strengths, different experiences can be recreated, when it be throwing a base ball or swinging a sword.

Electrohaptics is an effective way to bring users a virtual tactile experience. However, everyone’s tactile sensitivity is different, and the same feedback intensity can be different in different ways. In the hands of users, there may be different feelings. Therefore, we need to develop a set of general tools to adjust the corresponding feedback parameters for different users,” said Dr Yu Xinge, Associate Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at CityU.
