Visually impaired engineer Kursat Ceylan’s WeWalk smart cane comes equipped with an ultrasonic sensor that detects obstacles above the chest level and then uses vibrations to warn users. When paired with a smartphone, it can access Google Maps to further enhance navigation. Plus, built-in speakers and voice assistant compatibility ensures that users won’t miss a turn or stop.
How did Kursat Ceylan, a Turkish inventor and engineer, come up with the idea for WeWalk? An accident back in 2018 left him scarred as he struggled to navigate an airport while pulling luggage and checking GPS directions on his smartphone. For those interested, the smart cane is priced at around $599 USD and currently being used by thousands around the world in 59 countries.
