Xiaomi YU7 Electric SUV Launch
Xiaomi, the Chinese tech juggernaut known for smartphones and smart home gadgets, has officially unleashed its YU7 SUV onto the world’s most cutthroat EV market. In a dazzling launch event in Beijing, Xiaomi didn’t just introduce a new vehicle—it threw down the gauntlet to Tesla’s Model Y, securing a staggering 289,000 orders in just 60 minutes. Yes, you read that right: 289,000 orders in an hour, outpacing the 200,000 orders reported in the first three minutes.

Xiaomi’s EV journey has been a slow burn with a rocket-fueled payoff. The company first teased the YU7 in December 2024, positioning it as a direct rival to Tesla’s Model Y, the reigning champ of China’s SUV market. The official launch on June 26, 2025, at 7:00 PM Beijing time was a spectacle. Held in a glitzy Beijing venue, the event wasn’t just about the YU7. Xiaomi bundled it with the unveiling of the MIX Flip 2 foldable smartphone, the Pad 7S Pro tablet (powered by their in-house Xring O1 chip), and a mysterious “personal smart device for the next generation.” CEO Lei Jun took the stage, radiating confidence, and didn’t shy away from direct comparisons to Tesla. “The YU7 outperforms the Model Y in every aspect,” he declared, a bold claim backed by a spec sheet that had the crowd buzzing.

Let’s talk numbers, because the YU7’s specs are where Xiaomi’s ambition shines. This five-seat, mid-to-large-size SUV measures 4,999 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,600 mm tall, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase—bigger than the Model Y’s 4,797 mm x 1,920 mm x 1,624 mm and 2,890 mm wheelbase. It’s built on Xiaomi’s Modena platform, featuring an 800-volt architecture for lightning-fast charging (up to 5.2C, delivering 620 km of range in 15 minutes).

The YU7 comes in three variants: Standard, Pro, and Max. The Standard model, priced at RMB 253,500 ($35,360), is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive beast with 320 Ps, hitting 0-100 km/h in 5.88 seconds. Its 96.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supplied by BYD’s FinDreams, offers a CLTC range of 835 km—crushing the Model Y’s 593 km. The Pro (RMB 279,900) and Max (RMB 329,900) are dual-motor setups with 496 Ps and 690 Ps, respectively, sprinting to 100 km/h in 4.27 and 3.23 seconds. The Max variant swaps the LFP for a 101.7 kWh lithium ternary battery from CATL, delivering a 760 km range. For context, the Model Y’s Long Range AWD manages 719 km and 4.3 seconds to 100 km/h.

Xiaomi YU7 Electric SUV Launch Interior
Inside, the YU7 is a tech enthusiast’s dream. A massive horizontal center screen dominates the dash, reminiscent of Tesla’s minimalist approach, but Xiaomi ups the ante with a full-width “HyperVision” display below the windshield. This panoramic interface, paired with a small screen under the steering wheel (à la Li Auto), promises intuitive interaction. Lidar, a 4.6L fridge, 25 speakers, and dual 80W charging ports round out the cabin’s tech-heavy vibe. Storage is generous, with 1,970 liters total, including a 141L frunk.

Xiaomi’s pricing strategy is where the YU7 becomes a genuine threat. The Standard model’s RMB 253,500 starting price undercuts the Model Y’s RMB 263,500, while the Pro and Max variants remain competitive at RMB 279,900 and RMB 329,900 against the Model Y’s Long Range AWD at RMB 313,500. Lei Jun had teased that the YU7 wouldn’t just be RMB 20,000 pricier than the SU7 sedan (RMB 215,900), dispelling rumors of a RMB 235,900 base price. Final pricing was locked in just 1-2 days before the launch, a move that kept speculation high and competitors guessing.

The value proposition is undeniable. Posts on social media highlighted the YU7’s 96 kWh pack on 800V architecture versus the Model Y’s 62 kWh on 400V, with a WLTP range of 681 km—130 km more than Tesla’s Long Range. At $35,300 USD, it’s a steal for the specs, and China’s EV buyers clearly agree.

The YU7’s debut wasn’t just a product drop—it was a market tidal wave. Xiaomi EV revealed on Weibo that the SUV racked up 200,000 confirmed orders in just three minutes, ballooning to 289,000 within an hour. This wildfire demand echoes the SU7’s launch, which nabbed 248,000 firm orders over nine months.
