Between April 28-August 18 in 1958, Operation Hardtack I, a series of 35 nuclear tests, was conducted by the United States at the Pacific Proving Grounds. The one you’re about to see is the Wahoo test, which took place in the open ocean, and aimed to study as well as analyze high-altitude nuclear tests to refine their detection while investigating defensive practices for combating ballistic missiles.
Immediately after detonation, a spray dome was created that achieved a height of 840-feet after seven seconds. Its overall shape resembled a cone with 45° sloped sides. The base surge managed to reach a radius of approximately 8,000-feet in the downwind direction after 1.7 seconds. Fortunately, all of the bomb fallout stayed within the predicted area and the target ship was hit at 5,900 yards by the shockwave, resulting in violent vibrations.
