3D-Printed Soft Robotic Hand NES Video Games
Sure, eating this 3D-printed cultured beef cut may be satisfying for some, but this 3D-printed soft robotic hand is special in its own way. University of Maryland’s creation is agile enough to play Super Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo Entertainment System and actually win.

To make this possible, the team had to first design an integrated fluidic circuit that let the hand operate in response to the strength of a single control pressure. In other words, applying a low pressure only caused the first finger to press the controller and have Mario walk, while more pressure resulted in jumping. It was then guided by a set program that autonomously switched between off, low, medium, and high pressures, thus enabling it to press the buttons on the controller to successfully complete Level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. in under 90 seconds.

Recently, several groups have tried to harness fluidic circuits to enhance the autonomy of soft robots, but the methods for building and integrating those fluidic circuits with the robots can take days to weeks, with a high degree of manual labor and technical skill,” said Dr. Ruben Acevedo, a recent Ph.D. graduate and co-first author of the study.
