Chris Downing of Downing’s Basement has been building custom handheld consoles for over a decade now, and his latest creation made use of a 3D printer. Called the 5th GeN64, this sleek handheld N64 portable’s case consists of seven 3D-printed parts as well as all of the clear buttons.

Its vibrant 5-inch screen is a big step up from the Game Boy Pocket’s 2.2-inch reflective TFT LCD screen, which was also released in 1996. Since using the original hardware in this case is near impossible without lots of trimming, Downing opted to use custom PCBs, which still required lots of wiring to get everything working properly. Plus, it has an internal rechargeable battery via USB-C and a functional cartridge slot.

3D Printer Handheld N64 Portable

Hard to believe that it’s been over 8 years since my last major design of a portable N64. I mean to put that in perspective, the portable version before that was a vacuum-formed and frankencased monstrosity that might as well have been held together with bubblegum,” said Downing.
