5K Retina iMac Apple Studio Display Mod
Let’s face it, most non-professionals do not want to pay $1,500 USD for an Apple Studio Display, but for those with some technical skills, there is a fairly inexpensive alternative. You’ll first need to source a 27″ iMac with a 5K Retina display, which can typically be found in working condition for under $500 on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, etc.

Next, you’ll need to acquire a few parts to ensure that the iMac speakers can be moved over to the DIY Apple Studio Display, or the ‘Treble Bass Speaker Crossover Divider’, along with a power supply and LCD controller board. Last, but not least, you’ll need to disassemble the original display before installing the parts you just got in. For those who work on electronics regularly, this should be a straightforward 2-4 hour project once you have all the parts on hand.

5K Retina iMac Apple Studio Display Mod

I’ve been thinking about a full kit to provide faster or easier install or even a fully done option for a few years now. But…. Time…. And… Money…. When I did my 1st in 2021 I did the power cable and the power button the same way. I mounted the power supply in the same spot but the board above the hinge and that required no extra weight. I also wired an IR sensor to the button board and had it peek through where the OEM camera lives so remote was easy to use,” said one commenter.
