Homemade Electromagnetic Rail Launcher
MagLev cars already exist, and there is nothing stopping engineer Tom Stanton from creating his own electromagnetic rail launcher. This system works using multiple electric motors that pass a current through a coil of wire withing a ring of magnets to create rotational movement, while a linear system propels a magnet forward by applying a current to copper coil before removing it when the magnet is at the halfway point to avoid collision.

Stanton designed his system around a hall effect sensor that detects when the magnet both passes in front and leaves its detection range. After detecting the magnet, a current is applied. Once it leaves, the coil’s circuit is disconnected. The last issue was providing adequate power and in the end, supercapacitors were chosen that can supply up to 100A of current per coil. Now switching the coils relies on a microcontroller, which determines the state of the hall effect sensors and then toggles the copper coils as required.
