Researchers from Chengdu’s Southwest Jiaotong University are testing the world’s first maglev car that uses magnetic propulsion on a raised track in east China’s Jiangsu province. Put simply, they modified a normal vehicle with a permanent magnet array and then installed a corresponding conductor rail on 4.8-miles (7.8-kilometers) of road, resulting in magnetic levitation.
Chengdu’s Southwest Jiaotong University tested eight vehicles, one of which achieved a top speed of 143 mph. The team is examining how these cars may be fitted with maglev systsems in the future as an energy-saving solution. If future tests are successful, maglev cars may have a significantly longer lifespan than their counterparts, while also reducing energy consumption and increasing their range. Plus, a maglev car dedicated lane could also offer safety benefits. In related news, Fujifilm has developed the world’s highest capacity magnetic tape with 580TB of capacity.
