Google Universal Translator AI Lip Sync Change Language
You’ve seen Immersive View for Routes, now check out Google Universal Translator, a tool that uses AI to automatically lip-sync and change a speaker’s language. It was demonstrated at Google I/O 2023 with an Arizona State University lecture that was recorded in English and then transcribed, translated, as well as dubbed to match the tone in Spanish.

Universal Translator has enormous potential for increasing learning comprehension, but could be dangerous in the hands of bad actors. This means that Google had to build the service with guardrails to limit misuse and is currently only accessible to authorized partners. The company believes that building AI is a collective effort involving researchers, social scientists, industry experts, governments, creators, publishers and people.

This is an enormous step forward for learning comprehension, and we’re seeing promising results in course completion rates. But there’s an inherent tension here: Some of the same underlying technology could be misused by bad actors to create deepfakes. So we built the service with guardrails to prevent misuse, and we make it accessible only to authorized partners,” said James Manyika, SVP of Technology and Society, Google-Alphabet.
