Custom Digital Clock Sand
There’s the flux capacitor alarm clock, and then this custom-built digital clock that uses sand to tell time. Álvaro Gómez Giménez came up with the idea after being intrigued by persistence of vision gadgets, which use the human eye’s afterimage phenomenon to create the illusion of a continuous moving image.

To create a similar persistence of vision effect with sand, Giménez used small hoppers filled with fine sand that would then be lit up at the right moment during its fall. Solenoid-controlled gates dispense the sand at just the right moment, managed by a PIC18F4550 microcontroller. Many of the smaller and more intricate parts could not be found online or in stores, so they had to be 3D-printed.
