A set of obscure notes written by physicist Sir Isaac Newton went to auction, and apparently, he was deeply into the Egyptian pyramids. Put simply, he was trying to uncover the unit of measurement used by those building the pyramids and believed it was likely that the ancient Egyptians had been able to measure the Earth. By unlocking the cubit of the Great Pyramid, he too would be able to measure the circumference of the Earth.
Newton thought this unit of measurement would also lead him to other ancient measures, like the architecture and dimensions of the Temple of Solomon – the setting of the apocalypse – as well as interpret the Bible’s hidden meanings. Why are these notes burnt? They allegedly survived a fire started by an upset candle accidentally toppled by Newton’s dog, Diamond. These notes sold for a whopping $506,414 USD.

These notes are part of Newton’s astonishingly complex web of interlinking studies – natural philosophy, alchemy, theology – only parts of which he ever believed were appropriate for publication. It is not surprising that he did not publish on alchemy, since secrecy was a widely-held tenet of alchemical research, and Newton’s theological beliefs, if made public, would have cost him (at least) his career,” said the listing.
