Travelers said goodbye to the Concorde in 2003, but their dreams of traveling faster than the speed of sound is still alive and well, thanks to the Aerion AS3. Called the AS3, Aerion’s AS3 is a Mach 4+ commercial airliner that will take to the skies within this decade and have the capability to transport up to 50 passengers at a range of 7,000 nm. This means that you’ll be able to travel from Los Angeles to Tokyo in less than 3-hours at 2,300 to 3,800 miles per hour.
The company is building their global headquarters in Florida, right next to Orlando Melbourne International Airport, and hopes to have more details about the AS3 ready by late 2021. However, one thing is for sure, the AS3 will not have afterburners, or a system where fuel is sprayed into the engine’s exhaust and burned to increase thrust during takeoff / acceleration.
