AMD Radeon RX6900XT Valve Steam Deck Mod
Valve’s Steam Deck is a powerful handheld computer without any mods, but what happens when you connect a powerful external GPU? ETA Prime wanted to find out, so he connected an AMD Radeon RX6900XT and transformed the portable device into one that matches the performance of many high-end gaming PCs. This is not a plug-and-play operation for anyone wanting to try it out themselves, as it involves plugging in an ASRock RX 6900 XT OC since the Steam Deck does not have a Thunderbolt port.

More specifically, this mod required ETA Prime to open up the Steam Deck’s case and attach a PCI extension adapter directly to the device’s M.2 storage expansion port since its USB-C port only outputs to its dock accessory and isn’t compatible with semi-standardized external GPU devices. One other issue they ran into was that the 80mm PCIe adapter had to be held in place with sticky tape since it’s double the length of the Steam Deck’s 30mm bay.
