American Airlines announced today that the company has placed an order for 20 Boom Overture supersonic aircraft capable of hitting Mach 1.7 over water, or twice the speed of today’s commercial airplanes. Overture will be able to transport up to 80-passengers and has a range of 4,250 nautical miles, including routes like Miami to London in just under five hours.
A typical non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu takes around 5 hours, 45 minutes, but aboard the Boom Overture, it’s expected to cut that down to just 3 hours. The final production design of the Boom Overture is set to be revealed in 2025 with the first passenger flights happening by 2029. We have a feeling that Boom Overture will take to the skies sooner than the Virgin Galactic Mach 3 aircraft.
