BurgerBots is a brand-new fast-food idea in Los Gatos, California, that uses robots to put together burgers quickly and accurately. More specifically, ABB Robotics’ IRB 360 FlexPicker and YuMi collaborative robots. It opened on April 29, 2025, at the Breaking Dawn/First Born restaurant, created by entrepreneur Elizabeth Truong and part of the Oishi Mirai Restaurant Group.
The FlexPicker basically grabs toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles super fast, while YuMi puts the burger together and closes the box. It takes only 27 seconds per burger, making sure everything’s consistent and hygienic. A QR-coded conveyor system guides the robots to tailor each order to customers’ preferences.

People still handle some tasks, like cooking patties and prepping ingredients, but robots take on the repetitive burger-building work. The system also monitors inventory in real-time, letting owners keep food costs in check and plan forecasts more accurately. Truong believes robotic automation will be essential for restaurants in five years or so, for both back of house kitchen work and service up front.

Since it’s located in a high-end brunch and dinner place, BurgerBots just wants to provide a techy, enjoyable experience where people can see robots assemble their burgers. Burgers start at $18, which may seem like a lot, but it does match the posh feel of upscale Los Gatos.

Integrating ABB robots with the BurgerBots restaurant concept demonstrates the incredible potential for automation beyond the factory floor. The food service industry is dynamic and demanding, and our technology brings industrial-grade consistency, efficiency and reliability to this space. When we asked the hospitality industry, 89% of managers and 73% of workers said they are open to the integration of robotics to automate tasks within their operations,” said Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics Division.
