The Formula DRIFT series basically consists of an eight-round championship played out at race tracks across North America. Competitors are judged on line, angle, and style, rather than who finishes the course fastest, and it seamlessly blends together traditional racing and extreme sports. Napoleon Motorsports wanted to enter, but not with a traditional drift car. So, they took a Chevy Camaro, gutted it, and then proceeded to install an electric drivetrain generating 515 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque.
Formula DRIFT changed its regulations for 2019 to allow the Camaro EL1 to compete, opening up the rules to let electric and hybrid systems into competition. Previously, the event had to add a rule that all batteries in a drift car had to be functional, since it seemed that some teams were installing them, but not hooking them up, strictly to take advantage of their weight.
