When Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer opens next week, only thirty theaters will play it in full frame IMAX 15 Perf 70mm film. Why? The IMAX print is so large that movie theaters actually need to build around it, as the film stretches out to 11-miles and requires an entirely new projection booth.
Fifteen-perf 70mm IMAX is currently the highest resolution format that exists, boasting around 10-times the amount of detail compared to standard formats. Aside from measuring 11-miles, the film reel also weighs in at a hefty 600-pounds. Or, you could just wait until it hits streaming and watch the film in this awesome basement home theater.

I very much loved the structural assistance and the aesthetic charge of shifting between color and black and white that I had on Memento. I’d always been looking for a reason to go back to that. And in the case of Oppenheimer and the way in which we tell this story, it’s very subjectively told, but also with a more objective story strand that intertwines with that. It was really the perfect time to go back to that device that I loved so much,” said Nolan.
