Craft Aerospace Hybrid VTOL Diamond Wings
Craft Aerospace recently received $3.5-million in funding to develop a hybrid vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that has a design unlike any other. It’s designed for transporting passengers on regional missions with a range of 100-700 miles and a cruise speed of 345 mph. The diamond-shaped wings consist of a lower wing that attaches at the front of the fuselage, angling back, before wrapping over itself and extending towards the tail.

These two wings have a total of sixteen propellers that generate thrust while flaps extending from the rear, curve downwards to redirect the airflow towards the ground. By simply retracting the flaps, the pilot will be able to shift the thrust forward. When in the air, it’s capable of transporting payloads up to 2500-pounds and the hybrid-electric powertrain equipped with a turbine generator has a range of 1,000 miles.

We’re not talking about flying wealthy people to the mall — there are major inefficiencies in major corridors. The key to shortening that delay is picking people up in cities and dropping them off in cities. So for these short hops, we need to combine the advantages of fixed-wing aircraft and VTOL,” said James Dorris, Craft Aerospace co-founder to TechCrunch.
