The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Northrop Grumman and Martin Defense Group Manta Ray program phase 2 contracts to develop long-range unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). These underwater vehicles are capable of operating without the need for human intervention, whether it be for logistical support or maintenance.
Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) are engineered to stay underwater for extended periods of time, which requires an extremely rugged design. They can be used to to transport additional payloads designed for specialized tasks. The ultimate goal would be to build a combat version that could potentially be used in war.

DARPA’s Manta Ray program has made significant breakthroughs toward enabling payload-capable autonomous underwater vehicles to operate independently of crewed vessels or support infrastructure. By investing in diverse solutions, DARPA strengthens our ability to transition innovative undersea technologies to our national security partners,” said CDR Kyle Woerner, Manta Ray’s program manager.
