DIY Perks Next Level Camera Bokeh
Matthew Perks, the inventor behind this USB-C microphone and water-cooled TV, is back at it again with a next-level camera. To start the build, he first had to source a vintage episcope lens from an old art projector, which basically slid over artwork and projected the image onto a wall or flat surface in a dark room.

What sets these episcope lens apart from others is their large image circle when used to actually capture light instead of projecting it, or to be more specific, 500mm in diameter for this particular model. Next, a custom light screen was made using a big piece of diffuser film placed between two pieces of plexiglass. Another frame was then built to mirror it so the lens can be mounted on one side, while the camera is on the other to capture the projected image onto diffuser film. You’re able to focus the lens by moving one side of the rig forward and backwards on steel rods utilizing linear bearings. One issue he ran into was extreme vignetting that made the image surreal, so fresnel lenses were added on both sides of the diffusion screen to improve light redirection into the camera opposite of the episcope lens.
