Hydrogen-electric urban trains are one thing, the EcoXII is another. The student-led Eco-Runner team from TU Delft just set a new world distance record for greatest distance driven on full tanks of hydrogen fuel with the EcoXII by driving 2488.5 km (1546.3 mi) using six different drivers.
Hydrogen fuel for this vehicle is drawn from a storage tank to a fuel cell where an electrochemical reaction takes place to generate an electric current. Water is only the byproduct of this reaction and this run managed a fuel efficiency equivalent to 2,282 km/liter of petrol. EcoXII traveled at an average speed of 28 mph during the record setting run, besting the previous record of 2,056 km (1,283 mi), and there was even fuel left to spare at the end.

The car went off the track for a quick celebration. But this was not the end, and after a lot of tears and happiness it was time to continue with the record attempt. The car still had hydrogen left in the tanks, so we were not going to stop, and were going to push the boundaries as far as possible,” said the team.
