SpaceX is currently developing a stainless-steel rocket system destined for Mars at its private launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. On Friday, the team joined the lower and upper halves of the 164-foot-tall Starship Mk 1 prototype for the very first time. This vehicle is the successor to the shorter and smaller Starhopper prototype that was launched earlier this summer. Read more for a video and additional information.

Starship weighs around 200 tons without any fuel, or roughly the same weight as a blue whale, and once it’s filled with liquid methane and oxygen at the launch pad, the spacecraft may weigh up to seven times that amount. A full-sized operational Starship system will stand 39 to 40 stories tall once set atop a massive rocket booster called Super Heavy.

Starship will allow us to inhabit other worlds. To make life as we know it multiplanetary,” said Musk in a Tweet on Friday.
