Mario’s journeys have always been timeless and a new fan made project rekindles that magic with style. YouTube creator Syrus212 has rebuilt the Gateway Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy in Unreal Engine 5 and is offering a free PC tech demo that adds modern visuals.
It showcases Gateway Galaxy, the beloved starting hub of Super Mario Galaxy. This starry, compact world of tiny planets and floating platforms is full of Mario’s charm. Syrus212 has recreated this level and is guiding you through it as Mario. You can run, jump and spin across spherical worlds, each with gentle gravity. The demo keeps gameplay simple – no complex puzzles or enemies – but the act of jumping between planets is just as fun as the original 2007 game.
- LEGO Super Mario collectible set for adults – Return to a nostalgic era of side-scrolling Nintendo games with this brick-built Super Mario World:...
- Pixelated Nintendo figures – Turn the handle at the base of the model to make Yoshi run with Mario on his back, and turn the dial behind Yoshi’s...
- Interactive experience – The set includes an Action Tag so you can also add LEGO Mario, LEGO Luigi or LEGO Peach (figures not included) and see...

Unreal Engine 5 takes the demo to new heights. Planets are textured and sharp under advanced lighting. Distant stars twinkle and cast a soft glow on Mario’s path. The environments are lush and colorful and better than the Wii’s graphics while still capturing the whimsy of the original. Syrus212 has also included Mario’s voice clips from Super Mario Galaxy, a nice touch that grounds the experience. Hearing Mario’s “Wahoo!” when you jump between planets is instant joy.

Exploration is the demo’s appeal. There are no dense objectives, just free roam. Hopping between planets, experimenting with physics or just taking in the scenery feels rewarding. Subtle details – glowing flowers, distant nebulae – add to the atmosphere and make each platform a small discovery. Although small in scope, lacking big levels or bosses, this simplicity is a charm and a polished snapshot of Mario’s cosmic journey for fans who want a modern classic.

Nintendo’s stance on fan projects looms over the demo’s longevity. They are known to take down fan made projects quickly so this may not be available for long. For now you can download it and play Mario on PC without emulation. This is what fans do to keep Mario’s spirit alive despite the legal hurdles. Comparing it to the original game in 4K emulation would be interesting but the demo’s Unreal Engine 5 world is a unique blend of past and present.
Mario’s been around for decades and projects like this are why. Syrus212’s demo may not be online for long it’s still a must play for anyone who’s ever wanted to fly through the stars with a plumber in red overalls.
