Ferrari’s F40 is a sacred automobile in automotive history, as it was born in 1987 to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary, and was the final project approved off by Enzo Ferrari himself. Its twin-turbo V8, carbon-Kevlar body, and lack of driving assistance enabled it to become the first road car to reach 200 mph.
Fast forward to October 17, 2025 and Ferrari unveils the SC40, a one-off from its Special Projects program, built for a single client who wanted to capture that F40 spirit through today’s technology. Based on the 296 GTB, this bespoke supercar is nostalgia and modernity in one, and its story is as cool as its lines. Step closer and the SC40’s design tells a tale of reverence and reinvention. Its long, low nose and short rear overhang is a nod to the F40’s wedge shape, while the fixed rear wing – engraved with “SC40” on the right upright – is a direct homage to the original’s basket-handle spoiler.

Smoked Lexan louvers on the engine cover and a mesh back fascia reference the F40’s cooling requirements, which are intended to keep the turbocharged engine cool. Triangular carbon-fiber highlights and enormous intercooler intakes along the flanks reinvent the F40’s NACA ducts, combining retro and futuristic.

The SC40’s cabin is a showcase of restraint and tradition. Carbon-Kevlar, the material that made the F40 a trailblazer, lines the footwells, seatbacks, steering wheel, and dashboard inlays, its texture providing a direct link to the past. The seats are wrapped in charcoal Alcantara and red Jacquard fabric, evoking the F40’s Spartan, motorsport-inspired cabin while adding a touch of modern luxury. The layout is identical to the 296 GTB, but the materials enhance it, making it feel race-ready and unique.

Powering this incredible creation is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain, the same unit that pumps out a whopping 819 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque in the 296 GTB. Paired with a slick 8 speed dual-clutch transmission and a compact electric motor, the SC40 goes from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds flat, and tops out at over 205 mph. The way it handles, though, is all thanks to active aerodynamics and hybrid torque. Some might mourn the loss of that distinctive V8 growl, or the manual gearbox that would have given you a bit more connection to the road, but let’s be honest – the V6’s got some serious punch to it and that seamless gearbox is a real thrill.

The styling buck, the physical model used to shape the SC40, sits proudly at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. You can get a glimpse at it starting October 18. Oh, and the price? Well, that’s not being shared with anyone just yet, but you can bet it’s a seven figure number – and this is one of a kind so it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
