First KDS PC Controlled CD Organizer Tower
Clint Basinger of LGR takes an interesting look back at the world’s first PC-controlled CD organizer from 2001. Made by KDS, this tower basically consists of 75 motorized trays that can store and retrieve discs at the click of a mouse button.

There are two big caveats, or at least if used today: the first is that it requires a Windows 98 PC to create a database of the discs stored within it. The second issue is that the tower cannot read discs, as it’s designed purely to provide a convenient way to store and organize large collections of CDs, DVDs, games, etc. However, the software does let you search for specific discs and create a lending system.

First KDS PC Controlled CD Organizer Tower

One of my employers had a system similar to this back in the early 2000’s. Used it for disc sharing, and access controls. It was for a civil engineering company that used discs from city, county, and state for embedding in CAD and Microstation drawings. We also tested a similar lending feature between offices to keep track of where a CD went and who had it. We used it for about 2 years. It was later repurposed as a Windows 2003 file server for disc images,” said one fan.
