Singapore University of Technology and Design researchers have created FROW, the first ever rotary-wing drone capable of changing its wingspan in mid-air. FROW (Foldable Rotary Origami Wing) can still fly like a normal drone by spinning its entire body, but wings, joined in the middle by an electronics-equipped hub, are what sets it apart.
Each of its wings are made up of balsa wood panels encapsulated in a thin polymer membrane. A telescoping carbon fiber rod that runs the length of the wing is connected to a motor/propeller. What does this mean? Both wings can be left fully extended for maximum lift in normal flight, while the wingspan can be changed mid-flight if it needs to be reduced while flying in cramped areas.

The presented platforms enhance the practical uses of the monocopter platform by providing it with the ability to reduce its footprint while in flight actively, or by allowing them to dive through the air without any additional actuator,” said the researchers.
