GAC Design breaks away from traditional EV design with the Hyptec SSR Baja Concept, which takes the GAC Aion Hyper SSR and imagines its speed for sand and gravel, wrapped in a design that feels like a tribute to California’s car scene.
GAC Design roots the Hyptec SSR Baja in the sun-kissed, multicultural vibe of Los Angeles, its adopted hometown. The car is rebellious, covered in graphics that could be on a weathered dive bar wall or a stickered skateboard. A cactus mascot named Mr. Pincho grins from the side, while an “EVNONOIL” badge playfully nods to Pennzoil’s Liberty Bell logo. These aren’t just for show – they tie the car to California’s street culture where skate parks and desert racing shape the aesthetic. The paint scheme, with its orange base and gradients of pink to purple to blue to green, is alive, almost pulsing like a desert sunset.

Under the visuals, the Baja’s architecture is serious off-road business. The suspension is raised to handle rough terrain, the tires are chunky off-road, the cladding and side steps are for durability and the auxiliary lights are for dusty conditions. The tiny bed in the back holds two spare tires – useful for long desert trips where punctures are a real possibility. The huge rear spoiler is to keep the car stable at high speed over uneven surfaces.

The Hyptec SSR Baja is a motorsport inspired car, the livery pays homage to the Marlboro chevron of 1972 Formula 1 and Martini Racing’s stripes on the 1971 Porsche 917. GAC’s design team with experience of designing Formula E liveries for FF/Dragon/Penske Autosport have brought a sense of heritage to the car. The “LUCKY SEVEN, Los Angeles” logo is a reimagining of Raymond Loewy’s Lucky Strike design and the vintage California race decals from the 1970s add nostalgia. It’s like a rolling museum, past and future combined in a way you can’t look away from.

Performance details are scarce as GAC are focusing on the design and the vision. But the Baja builds on the Hyptec SSR’s foundation which has 1,224 horsepower and 0-100 km/h in 1.9 seconds for the Ultimate Track model. The Baja’s rugged setup suggests a trade off in outright speed for off road capability but the lightweight construction and functional aerodynamics will still deliver a thrill on sand and gravel. The car is all about agility and control, every element is honed to handle the unpredictable nature of desert racing.
