A genetically-modified purple tomato from Norfolk Plant Sciences may go on sale in 2023 as the company applied for approval in the US (USDA + FDA) as well as possibly the UK. Professor Cathie Martin at the John Innes Centre in the UK discovered that mice lived 30% longer when their diet was supplemented with purple tomato, which is rich in anthocyanins.

This anthocyanin-rich tomato boasting an antioxidant capacity that has been increased threefold was engineered with two extra genes from snapdragon, thus resulting in the production of its natural purple color. Purple tomatoes are currently being crossed with other varieties to create new ones, including purple cherry tomatoes and even a purple beefsteak tomato. Who knows? Companies may eventually use the A’seedbot to autonomously plant its seeds in remote locations.

This is fantastic, I never thought I would see this day. We are now one step closer to my dream of sharing healthy purple tomatoes with the many people excited to eat them. The bittersweet thing is that the tomatoes will be on sale in America and not the UK as well. But the plus side is that by focusing on home growers we will be consumer oriented, and we will be able to get feedback and interest needed to develop other products,” said Cathie Martin, Professor who developed the anthocyanin rich purple tomato.
