Developer and technology insider Kuba Wojciechowski reports that Google is allegedly developing their own Apple AirTags competitor for location tracking. He claims to have found references to these trackers, codenamed ‘Grogu’, in Google Fast Pair, which is the company’s method to quickly connect nearby Bluetooth devices.
This reference was discovered in Fast Pair for Google Android, typically used to pair devices such as Bluetooth earbuds. Google’s location tracker reportedly has a built-in speaker to help users locate their items and utilize both Bluetooth as well as ultra-wideband (UWB) for tracking. Since both of the Google Pixel 7 smartphones have this technology, it would make sense to include the, on their trackers. There’s no official word yet on when we’ll see these in stores, but Google I/O is coming up in May, so that may be your best bet.
- Keep track of and find your items alongside friends and devices in the Find My app
- Simple one-tap setup instantly connects AirTag with your iPhone or iPad
- Play a sound on the built-in speaker to help find your things, or just ask Siri for help
