Losing access to a Google account can feel like the digital equivalent of locking yourself out of the house with the keys still inside. Emails, photos, documents, and calendars suddenly sit just out of reach. Google has spent years adding recovery options for exactly these moments, and today it rolled out another one that relies on a short video of your face.
Selfie video recovery serves as an additional safety net rather than a daily sign-in tool. You pre-record it while you can still sign in, and then if passwords become stuck, your device goes missing, or other recovery avenues are unavailable for any reason, you pull out a new short clip, and the system compares it to the one you saved. Google sees it as one additional recovery option, alongside passkeys and recovery contacts, and continues to advise consumers to set up multiple methods so that if one fails, they are not left high and dry.

It’s quick to set up. Eligible accounts can start the procedure at g.co/signin-selfie, or just go to Google Account settings, Security and sign-in, and select Selfie video from the list. A guided thing then instructs you to gaze at the camera and make some basic head movements so that it can capture your face from various angles. On a PC without a camera, you can obtain a QR code to scan on your phone to complete the recording. Good lighting is quite beneficial, and you must ensure that your face is entirely visible without any sunglasses, hats, or other persons in the shot. Once you’ve completed, the system will encrypt the video in your account and it can be deleted whenever you like.
When problems arise later on, the system requests a new recording with roughly the same type of live movements as previously. Matching the new footage to the one you saved earlier helps ensure you’re the proper person, and the type of movement shows it’s a real person on the other end rather than a static photo or pre-recorded phony. Google also adds some extra checks to look for anything fishy in the sign-in request itself, but at the end of the day, even if the selfie itself looks fine, it may not be enough to get you back in if other signals raise some red flags, as the company considers the entire image from multiple angles.
You have control over what happens to your data, which is good to know. The video is only recorded with your permission, and it is only used to sign in to your account, unless you go in later and enable an extra setting that allows Google to utilize it to improve its facial recognition, age estimation, and other verification capabilities. (However, you can always turn it off if you change your mind.) To ensure that the movie remains encrypted while it is sitting there, removing it permanently removes the recovery option.
However, not all accounts will be eligible; Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, and Advanced Protection Program participants are all out of luck (for now). As for when it will be available, it is being rolled out progressively by region and device, so the setup page will simply tell you if your account is ready yet. To be clear, you must be signed in to record it; you cannot add the function while you are already locked out.
