At first glance, Hak5’s O.MG Lightning cable looks like any other, and most wouldn’t think twice about charging their iPhone with it. Upon closer inspection, you’ll discover that it’s just a clever hacking device that creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot that a hacker can connect to from their own computer. This person can then launch a web browser to start recording keystrokes.
Its creator, a security researcher known as MG, says the newest cables are now capable of geofencing, which basically means that a user can trigger or block the device’s payloads based on the physical location of the cable. The company also makes Type C cables, expanding its hacking capabilities to tablets as well as being able to change keyboard mappings or forging the identity of specific USB devices.
