Honor Magic V5 Thinnest Foldable Smartphone Hands-On
Honor’s Magic V5 has snatched the title of the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone, and it’s not shy about showing off. At just 8.8mm folded and 4.1mm unfolded in its sleek Ivory White version, it beats out the Oppo Find N5 by a whisker—0.1mm, to be exact.

The slim factor is the big story here, and Honor’s loving the spotlight. “The Magic V5 is the thinnest foldable you can get right now,” they crowed, though they’re quick to point out that only the Ivory White model hits that mark, with Black, Dawn Gold, and Reddish Brown coming in a tad thicker at 9mm folded. Tipping the scales at a featherlight 217 grams, it matches the Vivo X Fold 5 and leaves chunkier phones like the iPhone 16 Pro Max (227g) and Galaxy S25 Ultra (218g) in the dust.

The screens are a total knockout. Inside, you’ve got a 7.95-inch OLED display rocking a 2352 x 2172 resolution, a buttery 120Hz refresh rate, and a wild 5,000 nits of brightness that laughs in the face of glaring sunlight. The 6.43-inch outer screen keeps up with the same specs, so it’s just as snappy when the phone’s closed. Both use BOE’s 8T LTPO tech to save power while looking sharp. Honor’s calling these “stunning 120Hz OLED displays,” and early testers agree, raving about how clear and quick they feel.

Under the hood, the Magic V5 is a beast, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Leading Version chipset, cranking up to 4.47GHz. With up to 1TB of storage and Honor’s MagicOS running the show, it chews through games and multitasking like it’s nothing. “This thing’s got a flagship chip,” Honor bragged, and folks who’ve tried it say it’s lightning-fast. Honor’s “Dujiangyan” AI power management keeps things efficient, so it doesn’t choke when you’re pushing it hard.

Battery life’s a champ, too. Despite its slim build, the Magic V5 squeezes in a massive 6,100mAh battery—one of the biggest in a foldable—split into two cells for balance. That’s a big step up from the Magic V3’s 5,150mAh, and it comes with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging for speedy refills. “We packed in a huge battery with our E2 chip,” Honor said, and it’s built to last.

The cameras are where this phone really shows off its range. A triple rear setup packs a 50MP f/1.6 main lens with stabilization, a 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide, and a 64MP f/2.5 periscope telephoto with 3x optical and up to 100x digital zoom—sharper than the Magic V3’s zoom game. Dual 20MP f/2.2 selfie cams, one for each screen, nail video calls and portraits. Honor’s AI Magic suite spices things up with tricks like wiping out unwanted objects, cutting glare, and fixing faces, making it a photographer’s playground. “Cameras might not be the main focus, but we’ve still got a solid setup,” Honor noted.

Durability’s a big win for foldables here. The Magic V5 rocks an IP68/IP69 rating for water and dust resistance—a first for foldables—leaving the usual IP48 standard in the dust. You can take it to the beach or through a rainstorm without a worry, which is huge for a phone with a hinge and bendy screen.

No word yet on when it’ll hit global markets. Launched in China, the Magic V5 is eyeing places like Europe and Asia, but the US might miss out since Honor’s barely there. Pricing’s still a bit of a mystery, though Honor’s hinting it’ll be in line with last year’s Magic V3.
