iPhone 18 Pro Max Battery Rumors
Details that surfaced today from Chinese regulatory filings and posts by longtime leaker Ice Universe point to a meaningful jump in battery capacity for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max. The device could ship with a 5,567mAh cell in its U.S. version. That figure sits nearly 500mAh above the capacity of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and marks one of the largest single-year gains Apple has targeted in recent memory.

A different filing reference mentions a slightly lower battery capacity, roughly 5,391mAh, on a non-US variant, while several reports round the headline figure to around 5,500mAh. In any case, the increase marks the biggest capacity Apple has ever placed into an iPhone. Ice Universe ignited a social media debate: if the device requires a 240-gram body and a thickness of nearly 9mm to accommodate the larger battery, will buyers be satisfied? The post drew a lot of attention because the dimensions contradict the recent trend of lighter, smaller Pro Max models.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max weighed 233 grams and was 8.75mm thick, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max was somewhat lighter at 227 grams. Now, we have a device that weighs exactly 240 grams and is only 0.25mm thicker than the prior edition. The new stainless steel vapor chamber intended for cooling is most likely the biggest contribution to the increased weight. We saw how earlier titanium frames, which helped keep weight down over the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 generations, were not available this time. The return of a heavier cooling component, paired with the larger battery, explains most of the change back to the weight of older stainless steel models.

A rumor also suggested that Apple is considering a few cosmetic changes to the iPhone 18 Pro series to compensate for the increased size. Among other things, it appears that some of the colour selections may alter. We were expecting something dark and grey, but now it appears Apple may opt with dark cherry, light blue, and silver instead. These aesthetic choices are in addition to the structural decisions that resulted from attempting to fit a larger battery into a bigger phone. That larger battery does not rely on next-generation silicon-carbon chemistry, which isn’t expected to be available for at least a few years. Instead, it’s a standard battery housed in a slightly larger chassis. Efficiency increases from the A20 Pro chip and iOS 27 should help make the most of the additional capacity.

People who place a high value on battery life may find the trade off worthwhile. A phone that can match or come close to the endurance of certain Android flagships equipped with 7,000mAh batteries would be a significant step forward for Apple’s flagship model. Those that stream frequently, game, or travel without fear of running out of power will benefit the most, but the extra ounces and millimeters do take the device away from the light, pocketable feel that many users associate with the last several titanium Pro Max models.
