A photo shared on X by the account @MajinBuOfficial has circulated as an early look at an iPhone Duo 2 prototype. The image shows a pill-shaped rear camera module that runs slightly longer than the module on the current model and holds three lenses instead of two. Reports treat the image as unverified, with no independent confirmation of its authenticity, so it remains a clue rather than proof of final hardware.
This post is real. It features an iPhone Duo 2 prototype currently in the engineering and validation stage. It does not run iOS or any other software yet; this is simply what the device is expected to look like. https://t.co/DnRXcHM1oa

Current iPhone Duo models include a dual 48-megapixel camera system consisting of a main camera and an ultra-wide camera. To be honest, the main sensor can only provide a 2x optical-quality zoom with minor cropping because it lacks a separate telephoto lens, which some reviewers have cited as one of the foldable’s drawbacks. A third camera on the longer module would make a lot more sense, given that Apple has previously been experimenting with a genuine telephoto lens alongside the wide and ultra-wide lenses, since it would effectively address one of the first issues people pointed out as lacking.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, certain iPhone Duo 2 prototypes circulating within Apple include an under-display Face ID sensor and camera buried behind the outer screen, rather than a Touch ID sensor in the side button, like the first edition had. Let’s be honest: the side button isn’t the most useful feature in the world, especially if you’re left-handed. As a result, the under-display Face ID makes a lot of sense in light of that feedback.
Gurman predicts that this Face ID shift will occur with the second or third generation within the next few years. Just keep in mind that prototyping doesn’t guarantee anything for the next model, and that’s because Apple has made some progress on shrinking the infrared components for other devices, which could free up some space on the outer display that’s currently occupied by a standard camera cutout. However, fitting a telephoto lens to inside the compact foldable chassis presents its own set of issues, and previous reports stated that the camera would not be added until a later version.
The iPhone Duo 2 is still scheduled to appear sometime in the second half of 2027. Prototype hardware can change quickly depending on how buyers react to the first model, and whether the triple-camera configuration and under-display Face ID make it into the final product remains to be seen. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra already includes a third rear camera with optical zoom and basic facial recognition, so if these claimed experiments are put into production, they will help bring the Duo up to speed with some of those features.
