If, like us at TechEBlog, you’re constantly low on battery – and madly texting friends to let them know that you’re about to run out of power – then you may be in need of a power bank, or should the same be true for your laptops, tablets, and other devices, there’s this portable power station: Jackery’s Honda HLS290 features 290 Watt-hour energy storage (29,000mAh x 28 cells), and powers most laptops (3-4 recharges), smartphones (17 recharges), tablets (14 recharges), mini fridges (3.4 hours) as well as full-sized televisions (3.4 hours). Why is the mAh rating important? Well, this is the storage capacity available for a particular battery, with higher mAh ratings for the same battery yielding a longer run time. Straight out of the box, you’ll notice it does have some weight (6.6-pounds) and heft (9″ x 7.8″ x 5.2″), but with the power its packing, that’s no surprise. It includes the power station itself, an AC adapter, AC cable, car port charger cable, and a carrying case for the cables. As for the ports, the device has a DC 8mm (12V -30V / 42W Max) input, DC car port (13.3V), AC port (110VAC, 60Hz / 200W continuous), and two USB ports (5V, 2.4A). In addition to a 24-month warranty, you’ll get lifetime technical support, so should you have any questions or problems, there will always be someone to help.
You won’t have to guess how much power is left, as a simple press of the “Info” button shows the percentage left, and if you’re charging devices, the output wattage. As you can see, with an iPhone X, Bluetooth speaker, and a MacBook Pro all plugged in, the power draw was 34W. What sets the HLS290 apart from similar power stations is that during charging, it’s completely silent, with no fan noise or mechanical whirring. The devices were left charging until the power station ran down to 5%, and never at any point did the case get too hot to the touch, just slightly warmer.
To power on the charging ports, simply press the small buttons to the left, and once activated, you’ll see a green LED, with the process being the same for turning them off. Now for the more adventurous, powering a television, mini fridge, etc. while outdoors is a breeze – just plug them in like you would any other device and then turn on the charging port(s).
Is the Jackery Honda HLS 290 worth $399? Considering its portable size, power capacity, over voltage / short circuit protection, and most important of all, versatility, it most certainly is. We highly recommend this for anyone who spends time in the outdoors, or just wants the extra security in case of an emergency.
