LEGO Mindstorms Spike Prime Dot Matrix Printer
H/t: Hackster
LEGO Mindstorms sets may have been discontinued, but one inventor wants to show why that shouldn’t be the case. Inventor Luke Van’s spike prime dot matrix printer project began when his 7-year-old son requested that he build a LEGO paper stamping machine and after multiple creations, it ended up as the iPad-controlled device you see here.

Currently, the printer is capable of consistently outputting images of 17×17 dots within a space of about 2cm x 2cm. However, the resolution is mainly limited by the resolvable detail allowed by the nib of the marker being used, which means greater detail requires a pen with a finer nib. It utilizes pin that rotates around the output shaft of the motor to drive the scotch yoke for linear motion.

The motor can’t really move exactly by single degree increments. The motor takes time to start rotating, and to slow down when stopped, which sometimes causes the motor to overshoot or undershoot the intended angle. Precision seems to decrease as speed increases,” said Van.
