Lockheed Martin’s Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship for the US Navy was designed to allow for incremental upgrades over time, including advanced sensors, missiles as well as cutting-edge cyber systems.
For starters, it has the Aegis-derived COMBATSS-21 combat management system, which is the backbone of the ship’s mission system and integrates the radar, electro-optical infrared cameras, gun fire control system, countermeasures as well as short-range anti-air missiles. This Freedom-class LCS can serve surface, anti-submarine and mine countermeasure missions, while also deploying manned as well as unmanned aerial, surface or sub-surface missions.
