Lucasfilm Hires Deepfake YouTube Artist
Deepfake videos are nothing new, especially on YouTube, but rarely do we discover the identity of the person behind a particular clip. One YouTuber who goes by “Shamook” announced in the comments section of a video that he has been hired at Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light and Magic as a “Senior Facial Capture Artist”. Some of his most popular clips include Tarkin & Princess Leia in “Rogue One” as well as a more recent deepfake that de-ages Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian”.

Many Star Wars fans were delighted to see Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 finale, but he didn’t look quite as expected. De-aging VFX technology still has a long way to go, and one of the best examples would be Robert De Niro in “The Irishman,” who looks decades younger using the technique. On a related note, “Shamook” has since settled into his new job and will be uploading much more frequently after a short absence.

[Lucasfilm is] always on the lookout for talented artists and have in fact hired the artist that goes by the online persona ‘Shamook,’. Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and A.I. as a means to produce compelling visual effects work and it’s been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances,” said a Lucasfilm representative said in a statement.
