Russia officially unveiled their fifth-generation SUKHOI fighter jet at its annual MAKS air show, called “Checkmate”. This lightweight tactical aircraft is touted as a rival to the U.S. F-35 stealth fighter and expected to take to the skies in 2023, with the first batch set for production in 2026. A total of 300 Checkmate fighter jets will be produced over 15-years once serial production begins. Read more for a video and additional information.
The goal is to offer the Checkmate for export at the relatively affordable price of $25-$30 million per unit, which is far below the price of the F-35 that costs upwards of $80-million for the conventional-takeoff F-35A variant. Capabilities include short take-off and landing (STOL), a combat radius of 930 miles, and a a maximum turn loading of 8G. It’s speculated to use a variant of the Saturn AL-41F1 engine with a thrust in the 32,000 pound class.
