Montblanc Digital Paper E-Ink Tablet
Luxury, from the weight of a fountain pen to the subtle sheen of a leather-bound diary, has always felt heavy in the hand. Montblanc, the company that makes those tools, has spent years perfecting the art of putting thoughts on paper. Now, with the Digital Paper, they’re fully invested in the world of screens that mimic paper’s patience.

The device arrives as a sleek aluminum slab, measuring 222 x 191 x 4.9mm and weighing 436g. A monochrome E Ink display dominates the front, possibly 10.3 inches based on the frame, but Montblanc won’t say. Glass covers the screen and the edges are just curved enough to fit in your hand. Rear magnets hold smart covers in place and turn the whole thing into a portfolio that clicks shut with purpose. Dual band Wi-Fi lets you sync notes between devices while 64GB of storage is plenty for your scribbles, doodles and scans.

The Digital Pen, a 17g tool from Montblanc’s Meisterstück line sporting a polycarbonate body measuring 148 x 11 x 11mm, is good for hours of flawless writing. Over 4,000 degrees of pressure sensitivity for each shade from whisper light outlines to forceful strokes, haptic feedback to feel the resistance of graphite under pressure. The tips change to simulate different paper grains – smooth, rough or anywhere in between – and charges wirelessly against a leather wrapped sidebar on the tablet’s edge. Bluetooth 5.4 connects everything but doesn’t stream audio.

Built in templates drive the writing process: a daily planner schedules hours, a trip log archives adventures and a storyboard generates scenarios for the next pitch. It also goes beyond the screen: a companion app for iOS and Android duplicates the tablet’s information, displays files on phones and transfers files from computers via a web interface. The free Montblanc Cloud backs up everything and can be accessed from anywhere with a signal – email a marked up proposal to a colleague or transfer it to a ready drive via USB-C.

Power is from a 3,740-mAh battery that recharges via USB-C but Montblanc won’t say how many hours a single charge will last—days of light use considering the E Ink’s low power consumption. Folios in calf leather (black, blue, brown or white) are $205 and wrap the device like a bespoke suit.

The Digital Paper stands alone, the result of three years of collaboration with design agency AKQA to recreate the feeling of dragging a real nib on paper. $905 is more than the $629 ReMarkable Paper Pro which adds colour to the canvas and the Kindle Scribe which is focused on reading. Extra pens are $275 and nib packs are $40 for eight but the base package comes with the stylus and two spares.
