NASA 9-11 Attacks International Space Station
Astrophotographers regularly capture the ISS from Earth, but NASA astronaut photographed the attacks of September 11, 2001 from the International Space Station. He was Expedition 3 Commander at the time and and the only American aboard. Immediately after learning of the attacks, he began documenting the event in photographs because the station was flying over the New York City area.

Many images were captured in the minutes and hours following the event and using his unique vantage point in space, Culbertson recorded his thoughts of the world rapidly changing beneath him. Culbertson stated that what he witnessed from space that day was minor compared to the significance of what happened to our country today when it was attacked.
