NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover has seen many things over the past decade, including these spiky oddities, and most recently, a bizarre duck-shaped rock. It was spotted a few das ago on SOL 3628 (10/22) around Mount Sharp, a gigantic mountain that forums the Gale Crater peak.
This image was captured with the Mast Camera (MastCam), which provides multiple spectra and true-color imaging with two cameras. This system is capable of taking true-color images at 1600 × 1200 pixels and up to 10 frames per second hardware-compressed video at 720p (1280×720). It consists of the Medium Angle Camera (MAC), which has a 34 mm (1.3 in) focal length, and the Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), which has a 100 mm (3.9 in) focal length. Believe it or not, each of these cameras only has 8GB of Flash memory, good for storing over 5,500 RAW images, complete with real-time lossless data compression.
