High school student Dorothy from California unveils Plantolin, a pangolin-inspired robot designed to dig using its claws and deposit a yew “seed bomb” into the hole. This self-balancing robot sits on two wheels, each of which is powered by an electric quadcopter drone motor.
Plantolin raises its long tail as a counterweight when it makes its way across the ground, but tilts downwards to provide leverage once the robot stops to start digging. The two motorized front legs have claws that stay locked in place when they’re scooping dirt away, but then passively bend backwards out of the way when being drawn forward to take another scoop.

In my high school classes, we learned about how deforestation contributes to climate change. The restoration of forests through planting more trees is essential for the sustainable development of our planet. Pangolins spend a lot of their time digging in the ground, so I thought a planter robot inspired by the pangolin’s behavior would be very natural,” said Dorothy, Natural Robotics Contest winner.
