Porsche 963 RSP Street-Legal Le Mans Hypercar
Porsche has a knack for turning racetrack dreams into asphalt reality, and the 963 RSP, unveiled this morning near the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe, is a mind-blowing case in point. This one-off hypercar takes the championship-crushing Porsche 963 LMDh racer and spins it into a street-legal beast, paying homage to the iconic 917 driven by Count Gregorio Rossi di Montelera half a century ago. It’s a tribute to motorsport, stuffed with cutting-edge tech and polished for the open road.

The 963 RSP is built on the chassis of the Porsche 963, a hybrid prototype that’s been schooling rivals in IMSA and WEC races. Its core is a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8, teamed up with a Bosch electric motor and an Xtrac sequential transmission, pumping out a combined 671 horsepower. That endurance-racing powertrain rockets the car from 0 to 100 km/h in about three seconds flat, screaming its track-born heritage with every rev.

Unlike its racing sibling, the RSP required meticulous modifications to navigate public roads. Engineers raised the ride height, softened the dampers, and reprogrammed the control unit to make headlights and taillights function like those on a road car. Michelin wet-weather tires and a horn—yes, a horn—complete the street-legal package, earning special permission from French authorities to wear license plates near Le Mans.

Every detail of the 963 RSP screams exclusivity. Its carbon-fiber and Kevlar body, painted in Martini Silver, pays homage to the Count Rossi 917, a car that famously drove from Zuffenhausen to Paris in 1975 with minimal changes for road use. Painting the lightweight, razor-thin bodywork was a challenge for Porsche’s craftsmen, who sanded and coated each panel with precision.

The interior is equally bespoke, wrapped in tan leather and Alcantara inspired by Rossi’s 917. Modified wheel arch covers and a reprogrammed electronic setup ensure the car feels “friendlier and more forgiving” than its racing counterpart, as three-time Le Mans winner Timo Bernhard noted after driving it. “It felt unreal to drive this on public roads next to a 917,” Bernhard said. “The car was special, comfortable, and didn’t require full racing gear, which made it extraordinary.”

This project wasn’t born in a boardroom but trackside, during a meeting at Road Atlanta between Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, and Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Racing LMDh. Their vision? To recreate the audacious spirit of the 917’s road-going adventure with the 963. Roger Penske, the motorsport titan whose initials grace the RSP badge, was chosen as the car’s owner. “We have a great connection with Porsche dating back to 1972,” Penske remarked, underscoring the deep partnership that made this one-off possible.

More than just a tech showcase, the 963 RSP is a one-of-a-kind tribute to Porsche’s racing glory, crafted as a singular masterpiece that’ll never see a sequel. It rolled out next to the 917 near Le Mans, a fitting salute to its roots. After stealing the show at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s headed to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and will tear up the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025. With a rumored $5 million price tag, it’s one of Porsche’s priciest creations since the 918 Spyder, a testament to its rarity and obsessive craftsmanship. Unlike pie-in-the-sky concepts, this hypercar is the real deal—street-legal and built for one lucky owner who lives for its Le Mans legacy.
