When you think off-road vehicles, the 1992 Renault Racoon probably doesn’t come to mind, and that’s because it was a one-off concept designed by Patrick Le Quément. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 2.96L V5 engine making 258 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
A canopy-like door had to be opened to enter the vehicle, which has room for three passengers and plenty of storage space for luggage. Unlike other off-road vehicles at the time, this one was amphibious, as in the body could be raised upwards to provide additional ground clearance, or in other words, a fully indepedent, electro-hydraulic suspension. Other features ahead of their time include remote-controlled entry, a built-in computer, satellite navigation, rain-diffusing glass, and cameras instead of rear view mirrors.
