You’ve seen USB-C AirPods, now check out Restore Technique’s custom iPhone 13. It’s unofficially the world’s first iPhone 13 with a functional USB-C port, complete with fast charging, data transfer, and even cable reversebility, so you won’t have to worry about which direction to plug it in.
How does it work? Restore Technique basically took a C94 board from a Lightning to USB-C cable and then hacked it into the iPhone along with a USB-C port. Before attempting this project at home, just know that there are several far more complex steps, such as melting apart Lightning connectors and carefully taking apart 0.5 mm pitch flex cables to fit 0.6 mm pitch pads. For those who don’t already know, a new EU ruling states that all phones sold after the autumn of 2024 must have a USB-C charging cable, so this project gives you a sneak peek at how the iPhone 15 might charge.
