Remember the SEGA Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Unit (VMU)? If not, it is a memory card for the Dreamcast game console, complete with a monochromatic screen, speaker, proper directional pad, four action buttons, as well as the ability to connect and interact with other VMUs.
Tito of Macho Nacho Productions decided to turn one of these into a handheld game console that can do much more than store save game states. Thankfully, the Circuit Gem kit exists, which contains all that you need to turn a VMU into such a device. It includes an all-in-one circuit board, a 1.5″ (240 x 240 resolution) IPS display, a speaker, and a few cables. There are a few additional parts required such as a Raspberry Pi Zero board, a donor VMU, and a battery.
